Fluorouracil is a chemotherapy drug. It has been given systemically for anal, breast, colorectal, esophageal, stomach, pancreatic and skin cancers. It has also been given topically for actinic keratoses and Bowen's disease.
An enzyme called dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) breaks down most of the 5-FU in the body. Deficiency of this enzyme can lead to a toxic accumulation of the drug in the body.
