Plavix, blood thinners and CYP2C19 drugs

Plavix keeps the platelets in your blood from clotting. It is used alone or with aspirin to prevent serious or life-threatening problems with the heart and blood vessels in people who have had a stroke, heart attack, or severe chest pain.

Plavix is metabolized in the liver by enzymes encoded by the CYP2C19 gene. Decreased function of this gene leads to lower levels of the active drug which reduces it's effectiveness in preventing blood clots.
